How to keep your dog safe during the summer
It is extremely hot during the summer for people & pups!
Here are some tips to keep your dog safe.
- Never leave your dog unattended in direct sunlight or in a hot, parked car. When it’s 78 degrees outside, the inside of a car can heat up to more than 110 degrees in just a few minutes. A cracked window is not enough to keep your car cool.
- Always make sure your dog has access to fresh, cool water.
- Avoid strenuous exercise & activities with your dog on extremely hot days. There are plenty of fun, indoor activities you can do with your pups on hot days such as playing “find the treats,” teach a new trick, play interactive games, master obedience training, or play tug or fetch.
- Walk your dog when the ground is cooler. If you are going to walk your dog when the asphalt is hot, dog shoes are one of the best ways to protect their paws from the hot pavement. Be sure to buy dog shoes that have rubber soles to offer the best protection. Use a lot of positive reinforcement when introducing your pup to their new shoes. After you put on and tighten each shoe, reward him with a treat. After he has on all of his shoes, grab a toy & play with him for a few minutes so he associates the shoes with something fun. Then take him outside & continue to praise & reward him.
